Case Study: Rubber Plaster Molding (RPM)

Transcript

Today, we would like to take an opportunity to showcase the Rubber Plaster Molding casting process. Perhaps by now you have seen the process in action down with our foundry team.

This will be a case study example of relatively intricate, thin-walled geometry. This particular case is for an automation application, which is low-volume, on-going plaster mold production process we are offering to our customer.

This would be tooling offered in the $7,000 to $11,000 range, and in low-volume quantities, the unit piece price is in the $150 to $250 range. But as you can see it is heavily cored and there is a lot of intricate detail and passageways.

The plaster mold process, by now you are aware, is capable of great surface finishes {and} thin-wall sections...the mold we use is itself refractive.

This particular part would have passed through a horizontal machining center after a vertical op preparation. And it has gone on to be painted and assembled, as you can see here in this case.

The plaster mold process, again, is a great way to get into complex, thin-walled geometry with good surface finish for relatively low cost, upfront tooling dollars.
